Ninety subject matter experts from across Nations, NATO Commands, Centres of Excellence and other entities gathered in NATO Headquarters in Brussels to execute an experiment Workshop supporting development of the NATO Warfighting Capstone Concept.
The NATO Warfighting Capstone Concept is NATO Allied Command Transformation’s top priority for 2020. It is an overarching capstone concept that will guide the Alliance's future warfare development and the Warfare Development Agenda informed by a 20-year horizon warfighting perspective.
The aim of this experiment is to identify relationships between three operational contexts (Shaping, Contesting & Fighting), six attributes (‘Out-think’, ‘Out-excel’, ‘Out-fight’, Out-last’, ‘Out-pace’ and ‘Out-partner’) and initial illustrative programmatic recommendations in order to weigh and validate the priority areas at the core of the emerging concept. The experiment, based on a pre-survey used as a baseline for scenario-based discussions, is providing insights and recommendations informing development of the initial NATO Warfighting Capstone Concept.
Brigadier General Didier Polome, Champion of NATO Warfighting Capstone Concept development and of this event, emphasized the importance of both the experiment and the evolving NATO Warfighting Capstone Concept noting its role in, “analysing and informing NATO’s Warfare Development Agenda and those of the Allies.” He complimented the, “proactive participation of many Warfare Development Experts from member Nations and NATO organizations who are contributing greatly to defining essential priorities based on long-term trends in the strategic environment.”
The NATO Warfighting Capstone Concept Team and the Operational Experimentation Branch are working hand-in-hand to execute this experiment, ensuring the NATO Warfighting Capstone Concept team gets the most from the experts participating in the experiment in order to develop the most comprehensive and informed concept to prepare the future security environment.
