Internship Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I do not have a certificate in English from an internationally recognized testing body (e.g. TOEFL – Testing of English for Foreign Learners), can I still apply for the Internship Programme?
A. Yes. All we ask for is that if such a certificate is held then a copy is included in the application package.
Q. I do not have a Security Clearance, can I still apply for the Internship Programme?
A. Yes. A security clearance is not required to submit an application for the programme. Upon acceptance into the programme HQ SACT will work closely with the selected intern and the relevant National Authorities to obtain a security clearance.
Q. I obtained my degree in December 2019, however, the eligibility criteria shows that “2021 Interns will be either current post graduate students or recent post graduate students who have obtained their post graduate degree on or after 1 January 2020”, as I gained my degree a week or so early, can I still apply for the programme?
A. No, the dates are strictly adhered to, to be eligible for the programme, 2021 Interns will be either current post graduate students or recent post graduate students who have obtained their post graduate degree on or after 1 January 2020.
Q. I am currently only 20 however, I will be 21 after 1 January 2021, am I still eligible to apply for the programme?
A. No, to be eligible for the programme you must be 21 at the beginning of the year of the programme.
Q. Can I submit a handwritten application?
A. No, the application form and the motivational letter must be type written.
Q. Are there any common errors to look out for when completing the application form which will result in my application being returned?

Q. I am not a National of a NATO Nation, can I apply for the programme?
A. No, applicants must be a National of a NATO Nation, which are Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America.
Q. I am not a National of a NATO Nation, however, I am resident in the USA and hold a “Green Card” can I apply for the programme?
A. No, being a “Green Card” holder does not alter your Nationality status.
Q. I have completed a number of internships and I have gained a great deal of experience, can the monthly stipend be increased in line with my experience?
A. No, the stipend is a set figure for all interns.
Q. Where and how do I send my completed application package?
A. Fully completed application packages are to be forwarded by e.mail to firstname.lastname@example.org
Q. I have obtained letters of recommendation should I submit these with my application package?
A. No, only submit the documentation that is listed on our web site, if it is deemed by the selection board that it is necessary to obtain references then we will do so independently, from the persons listed in your application.
Q. I have obtained letters of appreciation could I submit these with my application package?
A. No, your application package should be limited to the documentation that is listed on our web site.
Q. I have not received e.mail notification of receipt of my application?
A. If you have not received e.mail notification of the registration of your application within 5 working days of your initial submission, then you should re-submit your application package to email@example.com.
Q. How will I receive information regarding the status of my application?
A. Following receipt of your application you will receive an initial e.mail advising of the registration of your application. During the selection process the selection board will place your application into one of three categories, either, selected as an intern, selected as a reserve or not selected, notification of the result of the selection process will be conveyed to all applicants by e.mail.
Q. I found out about the HQ SACT late in the day, is there any dispensation available on the closing date.
A. No, the closing date, as published, will be strictly adhered to with no exceptions, all late applications will be rejected as “untimely submissions”, as will any incomplete applications as at the closing date.
Q. The time line posted on the web site for notification of selection/non-selection has passed and I have not received any notification?
A. The time lines for the notification of selection are posted as a guide, in some instances the selection process may take longer than forecast, as long as your e.mail address has not changed, you should receive e.mail notification of the outcome of the process by the end of July 2020.
Q. If selected into the programme when will my internship start?
A. Internships cannot start until HQ SACT are in receipt of the security clearance certificate from the relevant National Security Authorities. Once this has been received the HQ SACT Civilian Human Resources Office will contact you to ascertain your preferred start date and then work with the receiving Branch to determine a mutually suitable start date.
