180406tide2017 400Sprinting to Day Zero Interoperability.

The 31st Think-Tank for Information Decision and Execution (TIDE) Sprint will provide more than 300 participants from over 23 NATO and Partner Nations with an opportunity to engage with many of the most pressing interoperability challenges faced by NATO today.

It comes two weeks after the conclusion of the TIDE Hackathon where teams from participating nations competed to solve three challenges identified at past TIDE Sprints. This year, the winning teams will show-case mobile communications and situational awareness applications, architectural solutions for a deployed cloud and federated file sharing solutions. This is the first time that a challenge from one TIDE Sprint has been developed into a solution at the TIDE Hackathon.

The winning solutions will be further improved at this event with the potential to undergo further experimentation at Coalition Warrior Interoperability eXploration, eXperimentation, eXamination eXercise (CWIX) in June.

NATO Allied Command Transformation hosts TIDE Sprint events putting a premium on ‘Day Zero’ Interoperability, the ability to plug & play Command and Control (C2) capabilities and Communication and Information Systems (CIS) at the very start of an operation. This enables ‘Day One’ connectivity which is the prerequisite for all operations.

This TIDE Sprint is not just about the TIDE Hackathon, there will be plenary speakers from the NATO Modelling and Simulation Centre of Excellence, the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) and Luciad, an industry leader for the provision of geospatial and mapping support.

  • For those with an interest in ‘block-chain’, the technology of bit-coin currency, there is an opportunity to understand how this technology can be applied to NATO. There will be a series of block-chain presentations from industry leaders followed by discussions that will culminate in a panel session to agree potential NATO applications, including the security of Additive Manufacturing 3D printing files.
  • The communications track from the previous TIDE Sprint has been replaced by two smaller 2-day tracks. The Mobile Communications and Battlespace Management Applications ‘mini’ track will take stock of the standards and policies from nations to identify interoperability gaps that need to be addressed. The Protected Core Networking ‘mini’ track will prepare a table-top exercise so nations can develop use-cases for Protected Core Networking within federated networks.
  • This will be the first time that the medical community is represented at TIDE Sprint and that community will discuss the issues of forward blood delivery and the challenges of tele-medicine in an operational environment.
  • Federated Mission Networking always plays a significant role in TIDE Sprint. Like the Fall 2017 TIDE Sprint event, this track will alternate between the routine business of Federated Mission Networking governance and processes, and the pressing need to guide other communities of interest through the Federated Mission Networking as they develop interoperability specifications and instructions.

Many well established tracks such as ‘Operations in Cyber Space’, ‘Command and Control of the information Environment’ and ‘Maritime Services’ will continue the work from previous TIDE Sprint events, building on recommendations as their ideas, concepts and roadmaps continually mature.
